Etymology: < Latin canēphora, Greek κανηϕόρος adjective ( < κάνεον basket + -ϕορος carrying), also as noun in senses given. In modern French canéphore, whence English canephor.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: caˈnephorus.
1. In ancient Greece: one of the ‘maidens who carried on their heads baskets containing the sacred things used at the feasts of Demeter, Bacchus, and Athena’ (Liddell and Scott).
