Forms: 1600s adoxall, 1900s– adoxal.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (iii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: adox n., -al suffix1; Latin adoxus , -al suffix1; Greek ἄδοξος , -al suffix1; French adoxal.
Etymology: Originally either < adox n. + -al suffix1, or < classical Latin adoxus or its etymon ancient Greek ἄδοξος (both adjectives: see adox n.) + -al suffix1, after orthodoxal adj., paradoxal adj., etc. In later use < French adoxal (1955 in the passage translated in quot. 1956), apparently directly < ancient Greek ἄδοξος + French -al -al suffix1, after paradoxal paradoxal adj.
rare. Now historical.
