In later use: an instrument for measuring the diameter of a round object, having two hinged legs resembling a pair of compasses and often with a scale attached for reading off the measurement; (also) a similar instrument with straight legs turned outwards at the end for measuring the internal diameter of a tube or pipe. Usually in plural, as callipers, pair of callipers.
