Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Calippicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Calippicus, Callippicus (1543 or earlier) < ancient Greek Κάλλιππος , name of a Greek astronomer (c370 b.c.- c300 b.c.) + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix.Compare slightly earlier Callippical:1655 T. Stanley Hist. Philos. I. 145 This time falling after the Callippical period, we shall compute it according to Petavius his method.
Astronomy.
Designating a chronological cycle proposed by Callippus as an improvement on the Metonic cycle (see Metonic adj.), consisting of four Metonic cycles (amounting to 76 years) less one day, at the end of which it was thought that the full moon and new moon would be brought round to the same day and hour as at the beginning of the cycle; of or relating to such a cycle.The beginning of the first Callippic cycle was the summer solstice of 330 b.c.
