Etymology: Apparently < a first element of uncertain origin + wort n.¹Perhaps compare adderwort n., although this is not attested as a name for feverfew. Compare also adremint (apparently < adder n.¹ + mint n.¹), listed in L. Nowell's Vocabularium Saxonicum; however, the provenance of Nowell's entry has not been traced. As he is known to have used the source cited in quot. a1300, there is a possibility that the entry could derive by transmission error from the same gloss (perhaps compare also Old English nædderwinde adderwort):a1567 L. Nowell Vocabularium Saxonicum (1952) 22/2 Adremint, a kinde of herb; I thinke it be feverfue. Compare also the following possibly related gloss (showing an element ald- of uncertain sense and origin):a1350 in T. Hunt Plant Names Medieval Eng.
