Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: carburet v., -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < carbur- (in carburet v.) + -ant suffix1, perhaps after French carburant (1899; 1857 as adjective in sense ‘containing hydrogen carbide’). Compare earlier carburetant n.
Now rare.
A liquid or vaporized hydrocarbon which is either mixed with air for burning as a fuel or added to a fuel–air mixture in order to enrich it, esp. in an internal combustion engine.
