单词 calypso
释义

calypson.

Brit. /kəˈlɪpsəʊ/, U.S. /kəˈlɪpsoʊ/, Caribbean English /kaˈlɪpsoː/
Inflections: Plural calypsos, calypsoes.
Forms: 1900s– calipso, 1900s– callypso, 1900s– calypso, 1900s– calyptso (rare).
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English caliso , kaiso n.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of caliso, variant of kaiso n.(although this is first attested later: see note), perhaps influenced in form by association with Calypso, the name of a nymph of Greek mythology, although if so the motivation is unclear.Although it is first attested later (probably due the limited recording of popular vocabulary before the mid 20th cent.), kaiso n. (with its variants) appears to have been the original word, and is still often preferred in Caribbean use. Association with the name of the Greek nymph may arisen as a learned folk etymology; it is also attested as the name of ships active in the Caribbean in the 19th cent.
A style of Afro-Caribbean popular music originating in Trinidad, characterized by syncopated rhythms and often featuring subversive or risqué lyrics sung in a mixture of English and Caribbean Creoles which comment on social and political topics of current interest. Also: a song in this style.
