Etymology: < a- prefix1 + drive v. Compare adreve v.In Old English a strong verb of Class I; strong forms survive into early Middle English. The collocations fram adrīfan , onweg adrīfan , ūt adrīfan found in Old English have sometimes been interpreted as compounds (compare discussion at out- prefix).
