Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps cannel n.2, with reference to the nail being picked up from a gutter or road) + nail n.Compare also later channel-nail , in the same sense (rare; apparently an alteration of cannel-nail n., after channel n.1):1671 J. Halfpenny Gentleman's Jocky clxxxi. 252 Search the wound with a little Towe at the Instruments end, to see which way and how far the Channel-Nail went.
Obsolete.
A nail which penetrates and wounds the sole of a horse's hoof.
