Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cannelure.
Etymology: < French cannelure groove (mid 16th cent. in Middle French as canneleüre ) < canneler to cut grooves or channels in (something) (14th cent. in past participle quenelé ; < canne cane n.1 + -eler -el suffix2) + -ure -ure suffix1, perhaps after Italian cannellatura (although this is first attested slightly later: 1561). Compare later channelure n.Compare the following earlier attestation of the French word in an English context:1722 J. James Explan. Terms Archit. p. v in tr. C. Perrault Treat. Five Orders in Archit. (ed. 2) These Cavities are frequently fill'd up with something not unlike a Flute, whence 'tis probably they take their Names: as the French Term Cannelures seem borrow'd from the Cavities themselves which resemble Canals.
