单词 cannibalian
释义

cannibalianadj.

Brit. /ˌkanᵻˈbalɪən/, U.S. /ˌkænəˈbæliən/
Forms:

α. 1600s canniballian, 1700s– cannibalian.

β. 1800s–1900s cannibalean.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: cannibal n., -ian suffix; cannibal n., -ean suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms < cannibal n. + -ian suffix. In β. forms < cannibal n. + -ean suffix.Compare Middle French canibaleen (1575). The use with reference to the U.S. college fraternity Phi Gamma Delta is based on the designation Fiji, commonly used of themselves by members of this fraternity ( < Fi G, abbreviated form of Phi Gamma (Delta)), and dependent on an archaic stereotype of the inhabitants of Fiji as cannibals.
Now rare.
Predisposed to cannibalism; of or relating to a cannibal; resembling a cannibal. Also: (in recent use) designating a member of the U.S. college fraternity Phi Gamma Delta (see note in etymology).
