Etymology: < cannon n.1 + -ery suffix, probably after Spanish cañonera (1590).Compare Middle French, French cannonière (1415 in this sense; now only in sense ‘opening in a wall through which excess water may flow out’ (1676)). Compare the following earlier attestation of the Spanish noun in an English context:1598 R. Barret Theorike & Pract. Mod. Warres Gloss. 249 Cannonera, a Spanish word, and is the place or roome where the Cannon is placed in a bulwarke.

A loophole (loophole n.1 1a) in a fortified chamber used to house cannon; (perhaps also) such a chamber.
