Etymology: < either capital n.2 or capital adj. + -ism suffix, apparently after Spanish capitalismo (1818 as capitolismo, or earlier).
Obsolete.
In the United Provinces of South America (later Argentina), in the early 19th cent.: centralization of power in the capital, Buenos Aires; advocacy of this. Cf. Unitario n.
