单词 adstupiate
释义

adstupiatev.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin adstupēre , astupēre , -ate suffix3.
Etymology: Irregularly < classical Latin adstupēre (also astupēre) to be astounded or amazed (at), to be enthralled (by) ( < ad- ad- prefix + stupēre to be stunned: see stupent adj.) + -i- (perhaps compare -i- connective) + -ate suffix3, perhaps after verbs ending in -iate borrowed from Latin, e.g. expiate v., abbreviate v., repudiate v., etc.The classical Latin author Seneca ( Dialogues 9. 8. 5) uses adstupēre with reference to riches, which may perhaps have given rise to the narrowed meaning of the English verb.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To esteem wealth greatly.Apparently only in or with reference to Cockeram.
