Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin cardamine.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin cardamine (4th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek καρδαμίνη some cresslike plant < ancient Greek κάρδαμον cress (see cardamom n.) + -ίνη -ine suffix2. Compare Middle French, French cardamine (1546).
Botany.
Originally: any of various cresses (cress n. 1). In later use spec.: any member of the genus Cardamine (family Brassicaceae), comprising annual and perennial herbaceous plants with white, pink, or purple flowers, including the cuckoo-flower or lady's smock ( C. pratensis) and the bitter-cresses. Also (in form Cardamine): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 654.
