1. A person who holds a hand of playing cards, esp. for an important or wealthy person while he or she is playing cards; also (figurative and in figurative contexts) a person (esp. a royal adviser or courtier) who is privy to confidential information. Obsolete.Chiefly used with reference to the courts of Elizabeth I and James I of England (James VI of Scotland).
