单词 adulate
释义

adulatev.

Brit. /ˈadjᵿleɪt/, /ˈadʒᵿleɪt/, U.S. /ˈædʒəˌleɪt/, /ˈædjəˌleɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin adūlāt-, adūlārī.
Etymology: < classical Latin adūlāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of adūlārī to fawn upon like a dog, to flatter in a servile manner, perhaps < ad- ad- prefix + a second element < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit vāra, (later)vāla hair, hair of horse's tail. Compare Middle French French aduler (14th cent.), Middle French or French †adulater (a1614 in an isolated attestation). The following apparently shows earlier borrowing of the Latin past participle (compare -ate suffix2):?1577 L. Ramsay Practise of Diuell sig. Biiijv These are one sort of the Babylonicall kinde, An other more finer, their praie to allure: Adulate creepers, in corners farre behinde, Soothing those thinges, which is lykest to endure.
transitive. Originally: to flatter in an obsequious or sycophantic manner, to fawn on; (now usually) to praise or admire uncritically or excessively.
