释义

camomilechamomilen.

Brit. /ˈkaməmʌɪl/, U.S. /ˈkæməˌmil/, /ˈkæməˌmaɪl/
Forms: Middle English camemille, camamille, Middle English camamylle, camamelle, camamyle, camomelle, Middle English–1500s camomylle, 1500s camamell, cammamyll, cammamyld, cam(m)omyle, camamile, camamil, camamel, camimile, chamomylle, chamomyle, chamœmell, 1500s–1600s cammomill, 1500s–1700s camomil(l, 1600s chamamil, chamæmell, cammomel, chamœ-, chamemile, chamomel, (1700s camomoil), 1700s–1800s chamomile, 1500s– camomile.
Etymology: < French camomille (also formerly camamille), < Latin chamomilla (Pliny, etc.), an altered form of chamæmēlon (Pliny, Palladius, etc.), < Greek χαμαίμηλον earth apple ( < χαμαί on the ground + μῆλον apple); so called from the apple-like scent of the blossoms. Compare Italian camomilla, Provençal camomilla, Spanish camomila, French dialect camomile, camamile. The spelling cha- is chiefly in pharmacy, after Latin; that with ca- is literary and popular.
a. The name of a Composite plant, Anthemis nobilis, an aromatic creeping herb, found on dry sandy commons in England, with downy leaves, and flowers white in the ray and yellow in the disk, but in cultivation often all white like a double daisy. The flowers are employed in medicine for their bitter and tonic properties. Also distinguished as Noble or Roman Camomile, White Camomile, and in its single wild form as Scotch Camomile.
