Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French afferour.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman afferour, affoerour, affirour assessor of amercements (end of the 13th cent. or earlier; compare Middle French aforeur person who carries out valuations (a1440)) < afferer , affoerer , etc. affeer v. + -our -or suffix. Compare post-classical Latin afforator assessor of fines and amercements (from 13th cent. in British sources as afferator ; from 14th cent. in British sources as afforiator , affrator , affurator ). Compare earlier affeerer n. and later feeror n.

A person appointed to determine the values of fines and amercements, typically charged with adjusting a generally prescribed penalty according to the particular circumstances of an offender and his or her offence.
