Etymology: < French afférent (adjective) that brings inwards or towards (1801 or earlier in an anatomical context, designating vessels), (noun) afferent vessel (1801 or earlier) < classical Latin afferent- , afferēns , present participle of afferre to bring to < af- , variant of ad- (see af- prefix) + ferre to bear (see bear v.1). Of a blood or lymphatic vessel: carrying blood or lymph towards an organ, structure, or part of the body; (of a nerve) carrying impulses towards the brain or spinal cord. Also: of or relating to such vessels or nerves; moving or flowing in such a direction. Cf. deferent adj.1, efferent adj.
