Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: carbo- comb. form, cation n.
Etymology: < carbo- comb. form + cation n., after French carbo-cation ( J. Mathieu and A. Allais Principes de synthèse organique (1957) 93). Compare earlier carbanion n.
Chemistry.
An organic cation in which the positive charge is localized on one or more of the carbon atoms. Cf. carbanion n., carbonium n.
