Origin: Probably partly a borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin carcinosis ; -osis suffix.
Etymology: Probably partly < scientific Latin carcinosis (1859 or earlier; < Byzantine Greek καρκίνωσις formation of a cancerous growth < ancient Greek καρκινοῦν (passive) to suffer from cancer, to become cancerous (see carcinoma n.) + -ωσις -osis suffix), and partly < carcin- (in carcinoma n.) + -osis suffix, after French carcinose (1866 in the passage translated in quot. 1869) and German Karzinose (1842 or earlier as Carcinose).
Medicine.
Originally: cancer as a disease or disease process (now rare). In later use: = carcinomatosis n.
