Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Chananeus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Chananeus (adjective) of or relating to Canaan, (noun) native or inhabitant of Canaan (see Cananaean n.).In quots. c1405 and 1630 with reference to the woman of Canaan who asked Jesus to heal her daughter (Matthew 15:21–8), in the former quot. after post-classical Latin mulier Chananaea (Vulgate: Matthew 15:22), in the latter after French Cananée (1550 or earlier as Cananee in Middle French). In β. forms after the nominative singular and plural forms of the post-classical Latin noun. In Old English also used with Latin case inflections. In γ. forms with loss of the final syllable.

A non-Israelite inhabitant of ancient Canaan; a Canaanite; figurative an infidel or misbeliever.In quot. c1405 with appositive noun prefixed (cf. woman n. Compounds 1b(a)).
