单词 canavalia
释义

Canavalian.

Brit. /ˌkanəˈveɪlɪə/, /ˌkanəˈvɑːlɪə/, /ˌkanəˈvalɪə/, U.S. /ˌkænəˈvɑljə/, /ˌkænəˈveɪljə/, /ˌkænəˈvɑliə/, /ˌkænəˈveɪliə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Canavalia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Canavalia, name of a genus of leguminous plants ( A. P. de Candolle Mém. sur la famille des légumineuses (1825) 375), apparently < post-classical Latin Canavali, denoting a plant of this genus (1763), itself apparently < a compound in a Dravidian language of the Malabar Coast (compare Tamil kāṉa-, combining form of kāṉam forest and vaḷḷi creeping plant). The post-classical Latin form Canavali is probably based on the word transcribed as Canavali and Canavaly in a Latin context in H. van Rhede tot Draakestein et al. Horti Malabarici (1688) VIII. 83 and plate 43, although it is unclear which language these forms are intended to show.
Botany.

Also (occasionally as canavalia): a plant of this genus; a seed of such a plant. Cf. jack bean n. at Jack n.2 Compounds 4, sword-bean n. at sword n. Compounds 6.Valid publication of the genus name: A. P. de Candolle Mém. Légum. (1825) 375.
