Etymology: < captain n. + -ate suffix1, frequently after forms in other European languages (see note). Compare French capitainat (1838 or earlier), German †Capitainat (1830 or earlier) both apparently earliest with reference to south-eastern Europe. Compare capitanate n., captainship n., captainry n. and captaincy n.In quot. 1593 at sense 1 probably after post-classical Latin capitaneatus district under the jurisdiction of a captain (see capitanate n.; frequently from 15th cent. in Polish sources; 16th cent. with specific reference to Livonia), in Polish contexts usually after Old Polish, Polish starostwo (1442; compare starosty n.) district under the jurisdiction of a starosta starosta n.; compare Lithuanian seniūnija . Compare German Hauptmannschaft position, office, or rule of a captain (Middle High German houbetmanschaft ), district under the jurisdiction of a captain (15th cent.). In quot. 1994 at sense 1 after Serbian and Croatian kapetanija (after Italian capitanato (see below); compare also Byzantine Greek καπετανίκιον ) district (third-level administrative division) under the jurisdiction of a captain within the Bosnian Eyalet of the Ottoman Empire.
