Etymology: Probably < car adj. + doer n. (compare forms at that entry).Compare the following, which are attested rarely in Scots in related senses: cardow, noun (1795 in an uncertain sense: perhaps ‘tradesperson or tailor who works illegally, clumsy workman’; also in forms cardoo, courdow), cardow (verb) to mend old clothes, patch, botch (1825 in Jamieson; also in forms cardoo, curdow, curdoo), cardowing, noun (a1800).
Scottish. Obsolete.
1. A tradesperson who illegally works in a burgh of which he or she is not a freeman or freewoman.
