Etymology: < care n.1 (originally as acronym < the initial letters of Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe , the name of the relief organization which arranged such aid packages, named with punning allusion to care n.1) + package n.The relief organization, while retaining the acronym CARE, later changed its official name to Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere, and then to Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere.
