Forms: 1700s–1800s cassiree, 1800s– cassiri, 1800s– kasiri, 1900s casserie, 1900s– casiri.
Origin: A borrowing from Carib. Etymon: Carib kasiri.
Etymology: < Carib kasiri cassava, cassava drink (or a cognate in another Cariban language); in later use sometimes associated with Arawak kashiri kind of sweet potato used to colour the drink (probably < the same Cariban word). Compare Dutch kasiri (1854 as casiri, or earlier), Sranan kasiri.
An alcoholic drink of fermented cassava juice and sweet potato traditionally made by indigenous peoples of Guyana and Suriname.The sweet potato gives the drink a distinctive pink or red colour.
