Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: after- prefix, beat n.1
Etymology: < after- prefix + beat n.1 In sense 1 after German Nachschlag (1850 in this sense in the source translated in quot. 1853). In sense 2a also after German Nachschlag (19th cent. or earlier in this sense).
1. Medicine. A beat of the heart or of the pulse following a main or normal beat; (in later use) spec. an extrasystole. Now rare.
