Etymology: French = Italian casserola , Spanish cacerola ; the radical form is apparently seen in Spanish cazo , French casse ‘an open-mouthed pan fit to boil things in’ (Cotgrave); but its actual history is obscure; compare French cassole , Italian cazzuola , Spanish cazuela , mentioned under cassolette n.
1. A kind of stew-pan. Now: a dish cooked and served in a casserole. Also à la casserole, now usually en casserole (en casserole adv.). Also attributive, as casserole cookery, casserole dish, casserole pan.
