Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh cariad.
Etymology: < Welsh cariad sweetheart, lover (c1400; c1325 in sense ‘love’) < caru to love, woo (13th cent.; apparently < a variant (with short vowel) of the Indo-European base of whore n.) + -iad, suffix forming abstract and agent nouns.
