Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable, e.g. caulotaxis n. Brit. /ˌkɔːlə(ʊ)ˈtaksɪs/, U.S. /ˌkɔloʊˈtæksəs/, /ˌkɑloʊˈtæksəs/.

[Greek καρπός fruit] producing flowers and fruit on its stem and branches many years without perishing, as ordinary shrubs and trees., cauloˈrhizous adj. [Greek ῥίζα root] sending forth roots from the stem., ˈcaulosarc n. = caulobulb n., caulotaxis n. [Greek τάξις arrangement (after phyllotaxis)] (see quot.).
