Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Agastache.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Agastache, genus name ( J. F. Gronovius Flora Virginica (1762) 88) < ancient Greek ἄγαν very much (probably originally showing the accusative of ἄγη wonder: see agalite n.) + στάχυς ear of corn (see stachys n.), so called on account of the multiple flowering spikes of the plant.
Chiefly North American.
Any of various perennial plants constituting the genus Agastache (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), native chiefly to North America, having multiple spikes of tubular pink to purple flowers and scented leaves; esp. (in later use) any of the many cultivated varieties grown in gardens for ornament. Also (in form Agastache): the genus itself.

1913 Contrib. U. S. National Herbarium (Smithsonian Inst.) 16 iv. 167 This is the only Agastache in the National Herbarium collected by Vasey.
1994 Capital (Annapolis, Maryland) 25 Aug. b8/4 (advt.) A real treat for the garden are the Agastaches with their lovely sweet edible flowers in shades of pink.
2001 H. W. Phillps North. Rocky Mountain Wildflowers 77/1 Species of Agastache have been used by American Indians for treating indigestion, colds, coughs, and fevers.
2007 Canad. Gardening June 98/1 The basket is also filled with pot marigolds and agastache.
