Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin carnyx.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin carnyx (1596 or earlier) < Gaulish (Galatia) κάρνυξ (reported in a Byzantine Greek context), suffixed form of κάρνον (also reported in a Byzantine Greek context), apparently in the same sense, specific use of Gaulish carno- horn (in names) < an ablaut variant (e -grade) of the Indo-European base of horn n.Compare French carnyx (1754 or earlier), carnix (1809 or earlier), German Carnyx (1756 or earlier), Carnix (1795 or earlier), Italian carnix (1770 or earlier). Earlier Greek sources refer to the instrument as a kind of σάλπιγξ (2nd cent. bc in Hellenistic Greek with reference to Gaul), using a more general word for ‘trumpet’ (compare salpinx n. 1); this word is also used as a gloss for Gaulish κάρνυξ and κάρνον in the Byzantine Greek sources.
historical.
A type of bronze horn or trumpet associated with the Celtic peoples of the Iron Age, typically consisting of a mouthpiece at the base of a long vertical tube widening at the end into a bell (often in the form of an animal’s head). The carnyx is known from descriptions by classical authors, representations in art, and from archaeological evidence; it appears to have been used esp. as a war-trumpet.
