Etymology: < agate n. + -ine suffix1.The form agatine is attested earlier as the name of a tulip (perhaps ultimately after French †agatine, in same sense (1658 or earlier)):1703 tr. H. van Oosten Dutch Gardener iii. ii. 155 The third sort of striped ones [sc. tulips] are called Agats; and there are also two sorts, the first whereof has but two colours, and the second, call'd Agatine, has three, and sometimes more.
