Paul, full name Stephanus Johannes Paulus (ˈstɛfənʊs jəʊˈhænɪs ˈpɔːlʊs), known as Oom Paul. 1825–1904, Boer statesman; president of the Transvaal (1883–1900). His opposition to Cecil Rhodes and his denial of civil rights to the Uitlanders led to the Boer War (1899–1902)
