language note:

Some words borrowed into English from Chinese have further developed in meaning. For example, gung-ho, which literally means `work together', was appropriated as a slogan by the US Marines in the Second World War. From this sense of military co-operation arose the idea of militant zeal, and nowadays the term gung-ho is still used to describe those who are all too keen to participate in combat. It is also used in non-military contexts to mean proactive, upbeat, enthusiastic, and eager, particularly as an attitude or approach. It sometimes has the implication of inflexibility and aggression, perhaps as a nod to its military origins. Another Chinese word which was originally very specific in its application is kowtow. Literally `knock the head', it refers to the former Chinese custom of touching the forehead to the ground as an act of deference. In its extended sense, it means to behave in an obsequious way towards someone. Its meaning has worsened from an act of submission and deference into one of servility. It is often found in statements such as wouldn't kowtow to, refusal to kowtow, too willing to kowtow, showing the negative associations now attached to this word.
