It was mid-afternoon of a bright autumn day when Lambert approached Glendora with Kerr chained to the seat beside him.

Kerr's nervous anxiety would seem to indicate that he expected something to happen at Glendora.

He had not shaved during the two days between Chicago and Glendora; the dust of the road was on his face.
