Kovalenko, Iakov Romanovich

 

Born Apr. 29 (May 12), 1906, in the village of Ranino, in present-day Liozno Raion, Vitebsk Oblast. Soviet veterinary microbiologist and epizootiolo-gist. Academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1929.

Kovalenko graduated from the Moscow Zooveterinary Institute in 1931. From 1931 to 1955 he worked in the State Control Institute of Veterinary Biological Preparations as researcher, section head, deputy director, and director. In 1955 he became director of the All-Union Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine. His research deals mainly with anaerobic infections of animals, immunity, and little-known diseases. Kovalenko has been awarded five orders and various medals.
