Iakubov, Kamil

Born Mar. 21 (Apr. 3), 1894, in the village of Abdikeevo, in what is now Shen-talin Raion, Kuibyshev Oblast; died June 25, 1919, in Kazan. One of the leaders in the struggle for Soviet power in Tataria. Member of the Communist Party from 1917.

Iakubov was a teacher by profession. In 1915 he was drafted into the army, where he engaged in revolutionary work among Muslim soldiers. He took part in the establishment of Soviet power in Kazan in October 1917 and was a member of the Kazan revolutionary military committee. In 1918 he was one of the organizers of the Muslim Commissariat of the Kazan soviet and a member of the revolutionary staff of the defense of the city. Iakubov was a member of the Central Bureau of Communist Organizations of the Peoples of the East under the Central Committee of the RCP(B) and chief of the political section of the Central Muslim Military Collegium. A participant in the formation of Muslim units of the Red Army, Iakubov was killed by Tatar nationalists during a counterrevolutionary insurrection. A street and a printing combine in Kazan are named in honor of Iakubov.
