HP-SUX

HP-SUX

(abuse, operating system)/H-P suhks/ An unflatteringhackerism for HP-UX which features some truly uniquebogosities in the file system internals and elsewhere (theseoccasionally create portability problems). HP-UX is oftenreferred to as "hockey-pux" inside HP, and one respondentclaims that the proper pronunciation is /H-P ukkkhhhh/ asthough one were about to spit. Another such alternatespelling and pronunciation is "H-PUX" /H-puhks/. Hackers atHP/Apollo (the former Apollo Computers which was swallowed byHP in 1989) have been heard to complain that Mr. Packardshould have pushed to have his name first, if for no otherreason than the greater eloquence of the resulting acronym.
