Gruen, Erich S. (Stephen)

(1935– ) historian; born in Vienna, Austria. Educated at Columbia University (B.A. 1957), Oxford (Rhodes Scholar; B.A. 1960) and Harvard (Ph.D. 1964), he taught at Harvard (1962–66) and the University of California: Berkeley (1966). His Last Generation of the Roman Republic (1974) was nominated for a National Book Award and his Hellenistic World and the Coming of Rome (1988) won that year's James H. Breasted Prize. He was president of the American Philological Association (1992).
