Hoover, William Henry

(1849–1932) industrialist; born near North Canton, Ohio. He ran a tannery business (1870–1907). In 1907 he bought the patent of an electric cleaning machine from James Murray Spangler. He formed the Electric Suction Sweeper Company in 1908 (renamed Hoover in 1910). He manufactured his "vacuum cleaner" and marketed it around the world, making his name virtually synonymous with the device. He was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years.
