Hobart, Garret A. (Augustus)

(1844–99) vice-president, businessman; born in Long Branch, N.J. He served in several areas of New Jersey state government before gaining the vice-presidency in 1896 in William McKinley's first term. He was a firm advocate of the gold standard. As vice-president, he presided over the Senate capably and fairly.
