In east-central VA, north of Petersburg; original county; organized 1634. Name Origin: For the lost town of Henricus (or Henrico), destroyed by Indians in the Massacre of 1622; itself named for Prince Henry Frederick (1594-1612), son of James I (1566-1625) of England. Originally called Henricopolis (the Greek suffix -polis 'city of Henry').
