Hungaria group

(hung-gair -ee-ă) A group of asteroids with a rather unusually high inclination of around 23?% and semimajor axes close to 1.95 AU. It appears to be a Hirayama family, which, in common with the Phocaea group (inclination 24?%, semimajor axis 2.36 AU), consists of members that have been separated from the asteroid belt by secular resonances. Such orbital resonances occur when the precession of a minor body's orbit is some simple fraction of the rate at which a nearby major planet precesses. This kind of relationship makes certain orbital elements more popular than others. The group takes its name from (434) Hungaria, a small, E-type main-belt asteroid discovered by Maximilian Wolf in 1898.
