(ĕ–), in full Abu Abdallah Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abdallah Ibn Idris Al-Hammudi Al-Hasani Al-Idrisi, b. 1099?, d. after 1154, Arab geographer, b. CeutaCeuta, city (1994 pop. 71,926), c.7 sq mi (18 sq km), NW Africa, a possession of Spain, on the Strait of Gibraltar. An enclave in Morocco, Ceuta is administered directly by the Spanish government.

c.1095–1154, count (1101–30) and first king (1130–54) of Sicily, son and successor of Roger I. He conquered (1127) Apulia and Salerno and sided with the antipope Anacletus II against Pope Innocent II. In 1130, Anacletus crowned Roger king.

He completed (1154) a description of the earth, compiled from his studies and observations and from the reports of travelers sent out by Roger II. This monumental compendium, called Al-Kitab ar-Rujari [the book of Roger], is the most important geographic work of the period. In a world map to which the book acted as a guide, Idrisi divided the earth into seven horizontal climatic zones, each divided longitudinally into ten sections. He is also known as Ash-Sharif al-Idrisi.
