Adamawa has an average height of 1,000–1,500 m; its highest peak is the Bambuto (2,710 m). Adamawa is composed of ancient crystalline and metamorphic rock (chiefly gneiss), topped by recent layers of lava and cones of extinct volcanoes. In the equatorial climate of southern Adamawa, evergreen rain forests grow; in northern Adamawa, which has a short dry season, there are forests of deciduous and evergreen trees and tall-grass savannas.
