Ianin, Valentin Lavrent’evich

 

Born Feb. 6, 1929, in Kirov. Soviet historian and archaeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1962.

Ianin’s principal works deal with the history of Russian feudalism, numismatics, and sphragistics. He became a professor in 1964 and was named head of the subdepartment of archaeology of the history department at Moscow State University in 1978. He has served as a leader of the Novgorod Archaeological Expedition.

Ianin received the Lomonosov Prize in 1966 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1970 and has been awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
