Imshenetskii, Vasilli Grigor’evich

Born Jan. 4 (16), 1832, in Izhevskii Zavod; died May 24 (June 5), 1892, in Moscow. Russian mathematician and specialist in mechanics. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1881). One of the founders of the Kharkov (1879) and St. Petersburg (1890) mathematical societies.

Imshenetskii’s works were devoted to the theory of partial differential equations, in which he developed and generalized the methods of C. Jacobi, A. Cauchy, and other mathematicians. He applied the technique of the separation of variables to equations with partial derivatives of the first order and gave a new application of the method of the variation of arbitrary constants to the integration of partial differential equations of the second order.
